We are facing a global food crisis. Volatile energy prices, speculative trading, land grabbing and rising global demand have all played their part in increasing the fragility of food supplies around the world.
How we invest in agricultural research and innovation will profoundly shape how effectively and fairly the world responds to this crisis. Multinational corporations are claiming that only technology they own (like GM) will be able to produce the quantities of food we need to feed ourselves now and in the future. Meanwhile governments are under pressure to spend public money on research that attracts corporate investment.
We urgently need additional funding to promote fairer, greener approaches to science and innovation. We need to show how this can work in practice, and lobby government to gain farmers and the public a real voice in the research that is done in their name.
